I have resolved to do all kinds of things in the past: quit smoking, quit drinking, lose 5 pounds, lose 30 pounds, go vegetarian, go vegan, start sending cards to people on their birthdays, exercise daily, enjoy life.
Every resolution brings abysmal failure. Every year I’m back to my old ways within weeks, if not days. This year I had an epiphany! Resolutions do not work because whenever I take control of my life and use my will to wrestle what I want out of this life, it all goes to shit. Resolution is, by definition, taking matters into your own hands to the Nth degree. A resolution is steeling yourself to be in control no matter what!
As 2012 begins, I have one resolution – to improve my conscious contact with my higher power. I need only be tenacious, steadfast, determined and courageous in cultivating a spiritual practice and reliance on something outside of  myself that is bigger and more awesome than my puny mind can comprehend. When I put this first, all the other stuff – the weight, the diet, the habits to be broken, my relationships, my finances – they all start to miraculously work themselves out quite nicely without ME being in the middle frantically trying to manage everything. For me, growth seems to occur when I let go, surrender and give up the fight.
My wish for you is that you have peace in  your heart in 2012, no matter what life throws your way.
